  1. Yes, I agree with article since voting isn’t mandatory many elections including this one will be skewed sampling of about half the electorate. Mandatory voting would make each election truly valid but at the same time it is not realistic because if 4 million plus people don’t what is the consequences? So if there was a way to punish no participants I believe it would work better.

  2. True, since voting is not mandatory many people will not vote, and that is where we fail. With people voting and people not voting the votes could go either way.

  3. Yes, I do believe that voting should be required for all Americans. Many people do not go out and vote, and then complain about who won the election. If you do not vote out of choice, you have no right to complain about it, as you choose not to vote.

  4. I believe that requiring Americans to vote would make the results far. I think many Americans don't vote because of the Electoral College. They believe that it does not matter if they vote, so why do it. I believe that we should either make it a requirement to vote, or to get rid of the Electoral College to get more accurate results.

  5. I disagree with the article. The Constitution gives us the right to vote, and choosing to not vote is in itself making a choice. I also believe forcing everybody to vote would be almost impossible to accomplish in our society, and it would take away the right portion of the right to vote. If I am forced to vote it is no longer a right that I can use but rather a forced action led by the government that infringes on my freedom. If we want a true representation of the popular vote then what should happen is the Electoral College should be abandoned as it is out of date.

  7. I disagree with the article that was given. The right to vote was given to us, therefore its a choice. Forcing people to vote is wrong, but its not a bad thing since a large percent of our population don't vote, and that would make a huge difference in whom becomes president. I personally do not like to vote, because i'm still underage and i'm not into politics that much.

  8. I believe that voting should not be mandatory. It's a right given to us and we should have the choice to exercise that right and not to be forced to do something. People choose not to vote for many reasons, one may be that they simple do not care for politics. If we forced those said people vote then they would just vote carelessly.

  9. I don't believe that mandatory voting would be beneficial for us all. There is no guarantee that people will make informed and educated decisions, just because voting becomes mandatory. We are given the freedom to vote and when someone does not vote, that is their choice. However, I do feel that weekend voting and same day registration should be enacted to give more people the opportunity to vote.

  10. I don't agree with the article given only because as Americans we have the right to vote and the constitution gave us that right. I think it's important for everyone to put their input into something like this. I mean sure it shouldn't be mandatory because some people don't want to be forced into doing something they don't want to, but at the same time it's crucial. A lot of people don't vote because they think their vote doesn't matter, but actually it does.

  11. I do not agree with this article. I agree that the voting would be more fair, but not that we should be forced to vote. As an American I believe in making my own choices and living my own life. If I didn't want to vote I shouldn't have to.

  12. Before reading this article, I believed firmly that mandatory voting would be detrimental to a society based on freedom of speech. However, this article brought some valid points to light.
First, many Americans have so little faith in the democratic system that they are entirely discouraged from voting as it is. They say they want change, but they don't believe it is attainable and therefore don't do anything to achieve it. If voting were mandatory, they would be forced to vote for their candidate, even if they don't believe he could win.
Second, many Americans who do not vote because they feel underrepresented (liberals, libertarians, etc.) are not as vocal about their views because they have never seen their candidate win. If one of their candidates wins the election, they are more likely to be confident enough in their beliefs to put them forward in a discussion and further the democratic process that way.
However, I cannot say that I agree fully with this article. Many people face extreme pressure from outside influences (parents, significant others, etc.) to vote one way or another. Being forced to vote in a way that is contrary to your beliefs harms democracy as a whole. It is essentially like you are giving your parent, significant other, or friend two votes when that person is only entitled to one. Voting contrary to these outside forces could threaten the emotional, mental, or physical safety of people.

  13. I am very neutral about this article, because there are many pros and cons to each side of voting.

  14. If people don't want to vote, they don't have too. However, if they don't vote, then the people in the past who fought to vote wasted their time.

  15. I believe it is imperative to vote for the leader of OUR country! Our ancestors fought for this privilege, why should we waste it? Our vote DOES matter!! If more people realized that, maybe we wouldn't have idiot candidates.
